Jonathan B. Rubenstein, MD, is professor of ophthalmology, vice-chairman and the Deutsch Family Endowed Chair for the Department of Ophthalmology at Rush. He is also an attending physician and director of the Refractive Surgery Section, where he provides LASIK, Custom LASIK, LASIK Eye Surgery and other types of laser eye surgery at the Eye Laser Center at Rush. Dr. Rubenstein received his medical degree with honors from Rush Medical College in Chicago and completed his residency in ophthalmology at Rush as well. At the University of Minnesota, he completed a fellowship in corneal and refractive surgery. Dr. Rubenstein has served as principal investigator in clinical trials of Laser Eye Surgery using the Excimer laser for PRK in astigmatism, myopia, and hyperopia and is a key instructor for the Rush Excimer Laser FDA certification course. He has published more than 40 scientific papers, lectured extensively nationally, is a frequent course director and instructor for both the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS). Dr. Rubenstein is actively involved in a number of professional organizations. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and serves on the Cornea Clinical Committee for the ASCRS. He is the chairman of the Skills Transfer Committee and associate secretary of Skills Transfer for the Annual Meeting Secretariat Committee of the AAO. A recipient of the American Academy of Ophthalmology's Honor Award, Dr. Rubenstein is the former president of the Chicago Ophthalmological Society and is on the board directors at the Illinois Society for the Prevention of Blindness. Randy J. Epstein, MD, is a professor of ophthalmology and an attending physician at Rush University Medical Center. His areas of medical specialty include refractive lens and corneal surgery and the management of complications resulting from these procedures. In addition, Dr. Epstein is actively involved in teaching medical students, residents and numerous ophthalmologists, both nationally and internationally. A Chicago native, Dr. Epstein grew up in West Rogers Park and earned his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois in Urbana. He received his medical degree from Rush Medical College and completed his ophthalmology residency at Rush University Medical Center. Following his residency, Dr. Epstein completed fellowships in both ocular immunology and cornea external diseases and refractive surgery at Emory University in Atlanta, where he was the recipient of the highly regarded National Research Service Award. In addition to being listed numerous times as one of Chicago’s “top doctors” by Chicago Magazine, he has received the Honor Award and, in 2004, the Senior Achievement Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology, as well as the Emory University Distinguished Alumnus Award. He is a prominent member of a number of professional organizations, including the American Medical Association, Illinois State Medical Society (Ophthalmology Risk Management Sub-Committee Chairman), Chicago Medical Society, Lake County Medical Society, American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery,International Society of Refractive Surgery (former Committee Chairman) and Illinois Association of Ophthalmology/Chicago Ophthalmological Society (former Annual Program Director). He also serves as a consultant to numerous corporations and medicaladvisory boards, committing his time and efforts to helping shape the evolving world of refractive surgery. Richard J. Grostern, MD, is an assistant professor of ophthalmology and pathology at Rush Medical College. He also serves as the director of both the Comprehensive Ophthalmology and Ophthalmic Pathology Sections at Rush University’s Department of Ophthalmology. He shares his time between the Eye Center Physicians Ltd at Rush and his private practice at University Ophthalmology Associates in both Skokie and downtown Chicago. His clinical interests include cataracts, refractive surgery, uveitis and diabetes. Dr. Grostern received his medical degree from The Chicago Medical School in 1995. After completing his ophthalmology residency at Rush University Medical Center in 1999, Dr. Grostern then completed a dual fellowshipin eye pathology and uveitis at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2000. Dr. Grostern is licensed to practice medicine in the states of Illinois and Wisconsin. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and a member in good standing of both the Chicago Ophthalmological Society and the American Association of Ophthalmic Pathologists. In 2003, Dr. Grostern received the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Achievement Award and continues to be actively involved in several of the AAO’s committees and panels. Dr. Grostern has authored six textbook chapters and several articles published in nationally recognized ophthalmology journals. He is also a peer reviewer for the Archives of Ophthalmology, a leading scientific journal published monthly by the American Medical Association. A native of Montreal, Canada, Dr. Grostern speaks fluent French and is conversant in Spanish. Parag A. Majmudar, MD, is an attending physician and Associate Professor at Rush University Medical Center. A vital member of Eye Center Physicians, he specializes in laser and non-laser vision correction procedures, cataract surgery and complications stemming from refractive surgery. Raised primarily in New Jersey, Dr. Majmudar graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, as part of an honors program in medical education. After receiving his degree at the Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, where he was a member of the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, Dr. Majmudar completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Chicago, serving as chief resident in the Department of Ophthalmology. His residency was followed with a subspecialty fellowship in cornea and external diseases and refractive surgery at Rush University Medical Center. An active participant in clinical research activities, Dr. Parag Majmudar is a highly regarded lecturer and instructor on the subjects of corneal and refractive surgery. In addition to his faculty position at Rush, Dr. Majmudar is a partner with Chicago Cornea Consultants, Ltd. and has private practices in Hoffman Estates and Chicago. Dr. Majmudar is an active member of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, as well as the American Academy of Ophthalmology, and he recently received the Academy's Achievement Award. He is an International Council Representative from the United States for the International Society of Refractive Surgery. Dr. Gaston O. Lacayo, III, is an assistant professor of ophthalmology at Rush University Medical Center. He has special interests in cornea and refractive surgery, and has authored numerous articles and book chapters on the latest refractive surgery techniques. Dr. Lacayo received his undergraduate degree from Duke University. Upon completion of his studies, he went to medical school at Ponce School of Medicine, in Puerto Rico, and trained as a fully bilingual physician. At Ponce School of Medicine, Dr. Lacayo was class president and voted to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He graduated with Honors and moved with his wife to Chicago to complete his ophthalmology residency at Rush University Medical Center. Upon graduation, he completed a subspecialty fellowship in corneal, external disease, and refractive surgery at the Emory University Eye Center. Dr. Lacayo was born in Managua, Nicaragua and relocated with his family to the United States. He was raised in Miami, Florida and has strong connections with his Latin background. Vanee V. Virasch, MD, is an assistant professor for the Department of Ophthalmology at Rush University Medical Center. Dr. Virasch graduated with honors from the University of Illinois College of Medicine where she earned her medical degree. She completed her internship and residency in ophthalmology at Rush University Medical Center where she served as chief resident. Following residency, Dr. Virasch went on to complete a cornea and refractive surgery fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis. During her training, she presented scientific papers at several meetings including the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the American Society of Retina Specialists, and published in the Journal of Ophthalmology. Dr. Virasch has also co-authored several chapters in prominent textbooks of ophthalmology. Dr. Virasch serves as a course instructor for skills transfer courses at the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS). She is also actively involved in clinical and surgical teaching for the Rush residency.

Raj K. Goyal, M.D., M.P.H.,F.A.C.S. is President of Chicago Eye Specialists in Chicago, Illinois and Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Rush University. He is actively involved in physician education and training of peers and students at national meetings. Dr. Goyal completed his medical degree and internship in Internal Medicine from George Washington University in Washington, D.C. This was followed by a residency in Ophthalmology at The University of Chicago. After finishing a fellowship in Cornea, External Diseases and Refractive Surgery at Johns Hopkins University Wilmer Eye Institute in Baltimore, Dr. Goyal stayed on staff for 7 years as Clinical Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Johns Hopkins. Dr. Goyal returned to Chicago to become President of Chicago Eye Specialists His professional affiliations include memberships in the Academy of Ophthalmology, American College of Surgeons, American Association of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, Chatham Business Association, Hyde Park Business Association and the Johns Hopkins Medical Surgical Association.
